シンガポールの南洋理工大学（Nanyang Technological University）*が人型ロボットの受付嬢、ナディーン（Nadine）を開発した。ナディーンは柔らかい肌と緩やかに垂れ下がったダークブラウンの髪をもち、まるで人間のように見える。彼女は来客があった時は微笑み、相手の目を見て話し、握手することもできる。
通常のロボットと異なり、ナディーンは自分の個性、気分や感情というものを持っている。彼女は会話の内容によって喜んだり、悲しんだりする。また記憶力もよく、依然あった人々を認識し、その人がどんなことを言ったか覚えている。
ナディーンは、南洋理工大学が開発した最新のロボットだ。そして彼女は生みの親であるNadia Thalmann教授の分身であり、アップルの SiriやマイクロソフトのCortanaによく似た、インテリジェント・ソフトによって動く。
将来ナディーンは事務所や自宅での個人アシスタントになりうるし、若者や年長者にとっての友人として利用することもできる。ナディーンのような人型ロボットは技術によって応用できるインターフェイスの１つにすぎない。
人型ロボットはテレビやコンピューター・スクリーン上で使われる低コストのバーチャル友人になるだろう。シリコン・チップ、センサーやコンピューターの技術的進化によってロボット技術はさらに進化し、ナディーンのようなソーシャルロボット*は未来の職場や家庭においてごく普通に使われるものになるだろう。
ロボット技術は過去数十年にわたって大幅に進化し、工場や輸送分野ではすでに使用されている。
”世界の多くの国は高齢者人口の増加に直面しており、ソーシャルロボットは縮小する労働人口問題を解決する方策の一つになる。また家庭においては子供や年寄りの友人となり、将来的にはヘルスケアサービスの一つのプラットフォームの役割すら担うだろう”と南洋理工大学のThalmann教授は述べている。
過去４年間、南洋理工大学開発チームは人を観察し、人と意思疎通のできるコンピューター付の仮想人間を造るために、エンジニアリング、コンピューター、言語学、心理学など複数の分野にまたがる学際的な技術を発展させてきた。
そして未来にはスター・ウォーズのC-3POにはこのような、言葉を話し、礼儀を兼ね備えた、知性をもったソーシャルロボットが誕生するだろう。
